Automated Control System of Northern-Bulganak Field with Eastern Division

Customer: 'Chernomornaftogaz' Production Department
General Contractor: 'Shelf' Institute
Automation: 'Votum' Ltd

Description of technological object

Automated control system (ACS) of Northern Bulganak field with Eastern division is one of the constituents of the ACS of technological processes on shelf deposit of Azov Sea. The system includes informating-controlling system (ICS) of East-Kazantyp gas field (combines informating-controlling system of gas pretreatment installation and technological platform TP-1) and the projected system of Northern Bulganak field.

Objects of automation are primary (main) and secondary (auxiliary) technological objects on ejection unit. Furthermore, the system performs monitoring of operation of subsea borehole termination equipment.

In and around of main production of ejection unit the following technological facilities are located:

  • subsea borehole termination equipment (2 bores);
  • gas ejection installation;
  • gas gaging unit;
  • methanol farm;
  • methanol transfer pump house;
  • piston and drainage intake units;
  • communication system;
  • fire alarm system;
  • intrusion alarm system;
  • power supply system.

Destination of the ACS

The system is intended for automated control of technological processes of gas gathering and gas treatment at Nortern Bulganak gas field with Eastern division and provides automated monitoring and control (including remote supervision) of technological objects of the field as well as information transfer about flow of technological process to the ICS of East-Kazantyp gas field..

Main task of the system is implementation of continuous maintenance of technological processes of gas production, gathering, treatment and transportation with minimum outlay of resources, as well as the guaranteeing of reliable control of main and auxiliary systems.

Structure and functions of the ACS

The developed system relates to distributed control systems and consists of three control layers (see structure chart on figure 1):

Layer 0 (field layer) includes local measurement instrumentation, sensors, transducers and actuating devices, local automation systems at ejection unit and subsea equipment.

Layer 1 (layer of monitoring and control hardware) is implemented on the basis of programmable logical controller (PLC) SIMATIC S7-300 that provides reception of information (digital and analog) about flow of technological process, state of systems and machinery, values of measurable parameters. The system also performs processing of the information in accordance with specified program, generation of commands and information transfer to layer 2.

Layer 2 (upper layer – layer of supervisor control and processing and visualization of technological information) is implemented on the basis of operator and dispatcher workstations that are augmented with communications facilities by Industrial Ethernet network. Communication system performs data exchange between the ICS of gas pretreatment plant (GPP) of East-Kazantyp field and the ACS of ejection unit of Northern Bulganak field by digital channel of radio communication with traffic-carrying capacity up to 64 kB/s. Communication system provides reception of instructions of remote control from the GPP and information transfer to the GPP.

Result of application of the system

Systems implementation permits:

  • to increase personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental protection;
  • to increase the efficiency of operation of technological equipment of the field;
  • to increase the efficiency of maintenance of technological process;
  • to improve technical and economic indices as a result of increasing of reliability of gas production;
  • to decrease gas outage;
  • to save energy and operating resources;
  • to promote implementation of progressive methods of control;
  • to decrease technical servicing and remedial maintenance burden.
